Don McCoy attended Riverside City Collect in 1963-64 and worked part time at KACE, KCKC and KDUO.  In 1963, KFXM morning DJ Dave Franzen hired Don to play Sunday night tapes of pre-recorded shows.

When Al Anthony came to KFXM, he hired Don as part-time and weekend jock.  After his graduation from USC in 1966, Al hired Don for the coveted 10am to 3pm slot.

“In late 1970, I left the air-shift and interviewed with Bob Bunnell who hired me to sell air time for KFXM and KDUO. Later, in 1970, I accepted a job as General Sales Manager at K/men. In April of 1972, the General Manager of K/men, Fred Lindholm and I purchased our first radio stations, WGNE-AM & FM in Panama City, Florida.

“Since then, I have been the licensee of 42 radio stations and I'm currently the Chairman and CEO of Magic Broadcasting Company.”

Dirty Don's Woman-Hating Club

“One day I got mad at my girlfriend and started talking about her on the air. I started saying crazy stuff like, ‘I think I'll run off to Florida and hunt Alligators,’ and, ‘I think I'm I'm going to give up on girls.  I know, I think I'll change my name to Dirty Don and start a Woman Hating Club. If you hate them as much as I do, send me a letter a let me know why you hate them too.  Maybe I'll start Dirty Don's Woman Hating Club and print up some membership cards and you can join my club.’

“When I got off the air that day I got a message that Al wanted to see me in his office. Al yelled at me and told me the next time I broke the format he would throw me out. A very weird thing happened. Within a week, we received a whole lot of mail addressed to Dirty Don wanting to join the Woman Hating Club. Al called me in and told me that he didn't get it but apparently I was on to something that was going to work.

“I started talking about the Woman Hating Club and reading the letters that my listeners sent in telling why they wanted to join my club and more and more letters kept arriving. It ended up being a really campy thing and I ended up with the highest ratings in theInland Empire. I guess the stripper in Gypsy was right, ‘You gotta have a gimmick.’ Al moved me to afternoon drive, 3pm - 7pm.”
