Bio of Johnny Helm

Johnny Helm today

“I was born in Whittier, California, on October 23rd.  I attended  Whittier High School, Cerritos College in Norwalk, and attended the William B. Ogden Radio Operational Engineering School in Burbank

“My career started in the Inland Empire, San Bernardino and Riverside, California!

“KFXM was my first real thrill in radio. I was there from the spring on 1967 for a little more than one year.  I worked the 11pm to 6am time period and later came back to do weekends from November of 1975 to January of 1977  I also did the Sunday Night ‘Flashback Show’ from 6pm to Midnight.

“Before KFXM I worked at KASK-AM in Ontario, CA as well as WMBG in Richmond, VA.  After KFXM I worked across the street at K/men.

“I am currently back on new KFXM in Lancaster, CA, a low power FM station.  The original KFXM-AM powerhouse in the Inland Empire sold not long after Howard Tullis died.  The new owners changed their call letters so the low power FM in Lancaster picked them up.

“I have one daughter named Amber.

“My favorite song was Don't Worry Baby by the Beach Boys and my favorite Artists were Elvis and the Beatles.”

I Turned Dick Lyon's $13 into $2,200 in Vegas!

“One of my favorite memories was when I went with fellow-KFXM DJ, Dick Lyons, to Las Vegas for the weekend. We got a room at the Rivera Hotel and spent the evening gambling and watching Shecky Green, the lounge comedian.

To say the least, Shecky Green was a riot!  By the time I retired back up in the room, I was dead broke. But what I found on the nightstand was $13.00 that Dick had left there before he went off to dreamland.

I ‘borrowed’ those 13 dollars and went back downstairs to gamble. As it turns out, I hit a lucky streak and turned $13 into $2,200!

The next morning I treated Dick to steak and eggs to show my appreciation for the loan he had given me!
