KFXM my first lesson in working in the Business

Although I had worked at five or more radio stations prior to KFXM, Al Anthony gave me my first real lesson about radio being a business rather than a DJ sitting behind a mic in a cool studio spinning records and enjoying the kind of life that most people just dream about.Vintage Bobby Blue

After my first book at KFXM, we were using Pulse ratings then, I got really great numbers...especially high in teens...which is what the 7 p.m. to midnight slot is all about in Top-40 radio. So I confidently marched into Al Anthony's office thinking now it's time for the big bucks. When I asked for a raise Al did not blink an eye. He stayed right on track with his extensive Dale Carnegie training. I was sitting sunk down in a low comfortable leather chair and he was looking down at me from his strategically placed high desk chair and said, "The only thing I can sell with those kind of ratings is pimple cream."

Needless to say, Al stayed on budget and I had to start producing concerts at Swing Auditorium to loose (sometimes make) money on the side.
